Provided below are introductory answers to frequently asked questions about the competition. Please browse through the subjects below to view questions and answers relating to your inquiry. REGISTRATION

Why do I need to register?
To ensure fairness, the competition jury will examine the submitted proposals anonymously. To make this anonymity possible, competitors will receive a unique confirmation ID number upon completion of the registration process. Registration also helps the AIA Newark and Suburban manage the juried competition more efficiently.

What does the registration fee cover?
In previous competitions, entrants were required to print, mount and ship their entries to our office; for this competition, entrants will submit all files digitally. The two boards per entrant of all finalists will be printed, mounted by AIA Newark and Suburban to be used for the jury and for future public exhibition. Printing the boards at the same time guarantees uniformity and quality while preventing damage caused by shipping. This process eliminates all printing and shipping time and expenses for the registrant. The higher registration fee helps cover this cost. The cost also includes two entry tickets to the Awards Ceremony for all entrants.

Can competitors submit more than one entry to the competition?
Only one entry is permitted per receipt ID number. Competitors who wish to submit more than one entry must register for each submission.

Can two or more people enter the competition? Am I limited to the number of people in the group? How does registration fee apply to a group?
Group submissions are acceptable, and the number of individuals in the group is up to the group. If you register as group you are considered a single entry with a single entry fee. Only one submission is permitted per receipt ID number. When registering a group, please provide your company or group name as well as the individual's name who is leading the group. This individual's name can be listed under BUYER. This individual will be the contact person for the group.

ELIGIBILITY

I am not an architect, nor do I have a professional design degree. Am I eligible to enter?
Yes! Anyone who has a point of view about multi-family mixed use housing and material reuses is invited to submit an entry. We are committed to generating innovative dialogue about these topics and thus open the competition to anyone who wants to participate.

I am an architect (student) outside of the United States. Am I eligible to enter?
Yes! Due to interest from overseas we have decided to open the competition to individuals including students and professionals in other countries other than the United States. We welcome your thoughts and are pleased to include entries from the international community.

Is a team of Intern Architects working toward licensure without a licensed architect eligible to compete on the professional level?
Yes! Intern architects working toward licensure may compete on the professional level. If the individuals have completed their undergraduate architecture education then they may enter as professionals. A professional license is not required to participate in the competition.

IMAGES

As a competitor, am I permitted to use the website images on my boards?
Yes. The photographs provided in the Site Brief/Images section of the website are provided for use on presentation boards if competitors so choose. A caption list accompanies each set of photographs and, where required, includes specific crediting instructions. If you incorporate an image taken by Matthew Gosser into your submission (background, rendering, collage, etc.), you must properly credit the photographer by including, “Photo: Matthew Gosser” or “Original Photograph: Matthew Gosser.” Images and materials found in other sources throughout the LIVE THE BOX website should be credited according to copyright instructions outlined within each source. Please review the “Ownership” section of the competition Submission for further information.

OTHER

Could you please provide more details about the printing?
Selected finalists PDF files will be printed using a large-format digital inkjet printer at 300 dpi using CMYK inks on heavy-weight paper. The boards will be mounted on foam core and laminated with a semi-gloss finish to protect the boards from wrinkles and fading.

Will I receive additional information in the mail?
No, all information is available on this website. There is no additional print information.

What scale should my submitted drawings be?
All submissions must include one site plan of Newark Site at the descretion of the entrant. The site plans available for download on the competition website are provided for your use. Perspectives can be submitted at any scale. Additional drawings, photographs, montages, diagrams and illustrations are encouraged but not required.

Is there a budget for the project?
At this stage of the competition, design proposals are not limited by the restrictions of a budget.

How technically developed must my proposal be?
We recognize the incredibly complex nature of Newark's infrastructure, and encourage competitors to partner with engineers, scientists and experts from other technical professions in order to generate the most informed proposals possible. Successful proposals will strike a balance between innovation and practicality.

Can I write more than 250 words for the project description?
Competitors may include text beyond 250 words on their boards, however the required text document MUST NOT EXCEED 250 words. Your 250 word description will be used as an abstract that accompanies your submission when presented to the jury and/or in an exhibition.

I received a receipt ID number and a transaction ID number which do I use to name my files? Which number do I use to name my files and on my boards?
Competitors are to use the LAST FOUR DIGITS OF THE RECEIPT ID NUMBER TO NAME FILES and on the boards. A unique number is issued to every contestant.

I only received a transaction ID number and it includes numbers and letters. How do I name my files? What should I put on my boards?
Competitors who received only a transaction ID number may use the last four (4) CHARACTERS of the TRANSACTION ID number to name files and on the boards. A unique number is issued to every contestant. (example: SJ8934LFJ823JL456TS, the last four characters are: 56TS. This is to be used as your submission ID.)

The online PayPal entry form did not allow space to enter a group name and/or team member names. I am working with other people and would like to include their information in the submission. What should I do?
After registration has been closed, the AIA Competition Commitee will be emailing all contestants to request additional information. Please feel free to respond to this email and provide additional information, including group names and team member names. However, remember that the submissions are anonymous. Only the Receipt ID/Transaction ID number is to appear on the boards. Your name and information will be posted with your submission online after judging has occurred.

What number or identification should I place on my boards? How will the winner be identified?
Competitors are to use the LAST FOUR DIGITS OF THE RECEIPT ID NUMBER on theupper right hand corner of the boards. A unique number is issued to every contestant. This number will be used to identify the winner. The jurors will not know the identity until after the winners have been selected.

Can you provide additional information about Newark?

Some of the images show a partially demolished building, should this be considered in the proposal? Some of the new images show the building completely removed. Please explain.
No, the existing building is NOT to be included in your proposal. The building has been removed as of 07/07/2008. The images posted at the beginning of the competition showed the building in partial demolition. The Images posted on page 2 show the building removed and the site being cleared. Please imagine the site cleared and a clean empty site for your proposal.

Are there any setback, height or unit number limitations?
No, there is not restrictions on the proposed building height. There is no restriction on the number of units proposed and there is no setback limitations. The competition is not using the Newark City Zoning regulations at this time.

Please provide more information regarding the text requirement?
The boards MUST include a text statement no more that 250 words describing your project concept. The 250 words do not include captions and/or labels. You do not have to use all 250 words on the boards, you are limited to 250 words. In addition to the text on the boards you are to submit a separate text/word document (*.doc) describing your project concept. This may be the same text included on the boards. This text statement will accompany your board in the online posting. This text will be posted beneath the images of your boards. If you are a selected winner this text may be printed separately to accompany the boards and may be distributed during the award ceremony, etc

Will 'Live the Box' be printing all of the contestant submissions? How will the work be reviewed?
No, the judges will be reviewing the work online through a secure website (password protected ). The work will be viewable to the public after the winners have been selected. Approximately 15-25 finalist will be printed for final review and exhibition.

Do I have to utilize the title 'Live the BOX' as it appears on the website on my boards?
No, you do not have to utilize the 'Live the BOX' logo as it appear on the website; nor the words 'live the box' at all on your submission. However, should you title your boards do not include the name of your group or company as part of the title of your project.

Can I use other materials for my project? May I use brick, glass, etc?
Yes, you may use other materials for the project.
The main component of the project is the re-utilzation of the shipping container. Other materials will be necesasary and acceptable. You may introduce any material necessary to enhance your vision for the site.

May I alter the shape of the container? May I cut, slice, break apart the container?
Yes, absolutely. The container is a source of material for your project. You may cut, slice, alter the container however you wish.
Be as innovative and creative as possible.

Do you have any additional information about shipping containers, such as sizes?
Yes,
www.portablecontainerservices.com/ContainerSpecifications.html contains additional information about containers. The standard shipping size is 20' or 40' x 8'-6" as listed in the brief. These are the containers that are causing problems in our ports and the surrounding land. The wall thickness is listed on this site as being about 1-1/2".The top and bottom rails are about 3" x 3"

I am having trouble emailing the large PDF files for submission, what should I do?
You may email the submission files within multiple emails or try www.yousendit.com. This website is a third party digital delivery company that provides a service for emailing large files. You may also send the six (6) files in one compressed 'zip' file. Any method is acceptable as long as all files get through.
