Collective Memory
The main idea of the project is to propose urban gateway which defines collective memory. The collective memory is shared, passed on and also constructed by the group, or modern society. Through collective memory, this project leads to the creation of urban environments that are adapted to catering to identity for Newark.
In urban scale, I propose two role model contexts. One is baseball stadium connecting to Riverfront stadium. Expanded urban context provides collective memory through gathering and meeting people. The other is character of Times Square, NY. Complicated open space encourages people to transmit events to downtown, catch information from digital billboard and enjoy modern living life. Through two atmospheres, collective memory reproduces and reframes this site and Newark. Therefore I propose mix used program including residential, retail and public plaza.
In architectural scale, for collective memory, I define these buildings as landscape. For this, they are designed to integrate the variety and diversity of scattered private homes and green space with Porosity. Also modular, interlocking shipping container shares functional space and creates affordable multi-family housing with close but private quarters, each equipped with a roof garden and a terrace. Furthermore, one of the most important points of the design is to create a green fabric that becomes one of the elements characteristic of open space and naturally links to the collective memory.
Designed collective memory enforces the character of urban gateway on the district. |
