Newark Cargo Junction
Project Statement

The concept utilizes standard shipping container modules to provide efficient and comfortable shelter for mixed income residents.  The project features 108 residential dwellings, each with its own private roof terrace.  In addition, one 10,000 square foot retail space has been set aside for a supermarket, complete with a landmark tower.

The architecture uses a modular arrangement of doors, windows and interior millwork to facilitate all of the occupants’ requirements.  All of the ground floor units are one bedroom one bath apartments while all upper level units are two bedroom two bath two storey units.  These units are separated by perpendicular shipping containers, creating private roof terraces for every unit.

The street is lent a residential, personal character by the use of stairs for every four units.  The open spaces piercing through the buildings relates to the nearby elevated bridge with its network of storage chambers and passages.  The tower both acknowledges and reinforces the existing tower of the train station, further enhancing the idea of Newark as a gateway city.  A tree as the centerpiece represents growth and vitality, which is the core mission of this project.

The program remains loose, further able to conform to local needs and requirements.  Through a balance of density, public and commercial space, parking and green space; the project aims to sustainably foster the redevelopment of Central Ward.
