The catalyst to interrogate issues specific to designing and building multiple-dwelling in a post-industrial social, economic, technological and cultural era was the spirit of nomadic mobility of the shipping containers. The attempt was also an opportunity to experiment with new or alternative construction processes and technologies with efficiency, economy, and flexibility as benefits.
The phrase coined by Louis Sullivan “form follows function” was a point of departure for our building foot print, our drive to resuscitate the economic vibrancy and scars/spirit (Chris Marker “La Jette “) left behind is indicated by the metaphor of warehouse producing products to frames producing program. The podium’s (2)undulating façade respects the demolished masonry façade. The ground level retail stores with high velocity activity of which provides a visual/access corridor at “T” intersections as well. Second and third levels are office spaces or medium velocity retail stores, with the spirit of self adjusting assemblages. The top most level of the podium operate as a nursery of indigenous plants, as well as filtration to rainwater and retainage system. Inner court provides outdoor cafés and performance space to elevate and resuscitate the spirit of Newark by performers/spectators (3.) Residential towers (1) rise and orients with dignity/serenity respecting the historic Market/Broad Streets vibrancy as a beacon to Newarks historic vibrancy.
