After investigation of construction site, it’s easily seen that there are two major entrance which is conjunction of Dr. M.L. King Jr. Blvd and Orange Street, and northeast entrance which is conjunction of train station and university avenue.
After discussion of these two major entrances (gathering points) there is need of a pathway which will connect these two entrances. The pathway is in the direction of southwest, northwest. On this pathways there are two squares, one is located in front of train station, the other is located adjacent to Orange Street. These squares are socializing points of residences, and also pedestrian entrances of underground car parking area.
In the process of designing the site was divided into grids based on container dimensions and container placements were made irregularly to provide maximum daylight. The same principal was followed in block heights. The blocks near to the ends of the site are lower while middle blocks are higher.
In different types of flats are planned using containers. Type 4 is only used in the middle high blocks while the others are used in lower blocks randomly. In the middle-high blocks the core is reinforced concrete to stranger the construction while in the lower blocks steel construction is preferred for the platforms. Middle-high blocks last two floors are reserved for food, sports area which has alarge platform connecting the two high buildings and has a view of entire area.
The parts cut from containers are used in two different ways. First way is to use them over platforms to have sun protection, and the other way is to use them as green plant panels on the sides of the blocks to give the blocks a green natural look.
The project targets to be a green project with green plant panels, maximum air circulation, maximum daylight capacity and has a great potential to become one of the new landmarks of Newark, NJ. |
