Design Intent

Families are complex and diverse, yet we have filed them into a group comprising two parents and 2.4 children. In many countries, the proportion of singles or couples outweighs the traditional family. The key to understanding families is not to define every type, but understand that the concept of the family is subjective and can differ greatly between age groups, cultures and the unique experiences of each individual.

To accommodate any family type, adaptability is essential. We propose an urban framework which can be adapted to any changing economic climate and the needs of the community as a whole. As such, the containers are not living spaces, rather they form a framework for a space in which life is lived. The container is not limited to the space within its walls; rather it forms the floors, walls and ceilings of a greater space. People have control and are not subject to predetermined stereotypes governing the way they should live. The same philosophy is applied to the ground floor as these adaptable spaces convert into retail or offices. Each commercial space is equipped with a sleeping pod and kitchen so the tenant or owner can live where they work, thus eliminating another car from the road.
