BOX Park -
Assembled boxes are used whole & cut into 4-plex units, flexibly planned allowing for mixed-use, multi-family and additions, sited extending Henry Wright’s Radburn concepts of multiuse central site space, grass block paved, for recreation, outdoor commerce & parking. 80 units in 20 buildings use 240 whole boxes plus cut boxes.
Structural assembly of the boxes on pier foundation is accomplished using epoxy quick bolt technology allowing for removal of box parts not needed. Resulting openings are reinforced with steel framing.
Landscaping with deciduous trees provides shade in summer & allows winter sunlight for passive and active solar. Unit plan is a central corridor scheme enhancing natural ventilation. Penthouses support solar collectors providing heating and hot water; reinforce ventilation & take in natural light, distributed thru lay lights to interior rooms.
The pedestrian nature of the park like neighborhood encourages sustainability while providing security thru visibility and activity. Planning allows for passive & active amenities: tot lot, splash pool, multi-purpose courts & park benches plus outdoor space for each unit. Short term parking is provided with sidewalks & landscaping on the surrounding streets. Sustainable building elements include vegetated roofs, reuse of materials & access to public transportation.
