This proposal for a multi-family mixed use living complex, utilizes discarded shipping containers to create habitable dwellings and incorporates necessary components in order to address concerns important to the city of Newark, NJ. (Economic stimulus, historical evidence, transportation and access, and multi-family living) Urbanistically, the site provides inviting pedestrian access ways corresponding to the existing grid and further connects the renovated Broad Street train station to the community. Residences can be accessed by staircases on both street and garden sides. Ground level retail opportunities welcome new and existing business’ to stimulate site occupancy and the city’s economy. A farmers market / green house contributes fresh produce and serves as an example of sustainable design. Interior community green spaces encourage social interaction and community congregation. Containers are mixed with brick and glass to integrate into the surrounding community and organized to present low-rise traditional living over retail street fronts. Recycled I-beams support upper floors and provide a perimeter arcade. Neighborhood tree patterns are repeated to maintain uniformity within the landscape. Railroad ties guide visitors into the retail courtyard honoring Newark’s historical railroad lines. Parking is provided both underground, open on the west and east, and on-grade along Orange Street, for easy accessibility. 6 variable containers in numerous configurations make up the complex, accommodating various family sizes. Private areas shared by residents maintain boundaries for individual units. The continuous roof terrace unites the facade and provides a park like setting for resident use while taking advantage of the earth’s natural resources.
