NEWARK’S MIXED USE TRANSIT HUB

Newark Transit Hub is a mixed-use development centered on movement and activity.  The main concept is the creation of a transfer center to connect people to Newark and New York via the bus, light rail, and train system.  While the transit Hub is practical for commuters, the two plazas and retail oriented ground floor serve to make the development a destination for recreation.  The site opens up to plazas on the both the northeast and the southwest, taking in crowds from Riverfront stadium, Rutgers, and other university campuses.

The basic form is taken from the idea of transportation networks, with branches that merge and intercept with one another.  The idea of movement is represented even in the details of the facade. The main building facade has an undulated surface broken up by the linear penetrating volumes.  The delicate retail storefront rises from the ground plane to support the residential mass, creating the impression that it floats above.
